When taking pictures of your artistic creations, jewelry or otherwise, it can be tricky to find the right background. Here are a few suggestions to consider before you click the shutter.

Fabric remnants are a great way to give your backdrops texture and depth.

Using fabric remnants can give your photographs added texture and depth.

Fabric Remnants – Next time you head into Jo-Ann’s or similar fabric store, make sure you stop by the remnants section. These are usually the fabric that is left at the end of a roll that is too short to be left out on display. These pieces are typically discounted anywhere from 50-75% off the original price.

“Tide Pools” by Suzann Sladcik Wilson. A tile can be a great neutral background when shooting your jewelry.

Tiles – Tiles make a great backgrounds due to the range of colors and finishes they come in. Many of the larger home improvement stores sell tiles individually. They can be relatively inexpensive ranging in price from .50 – $5.00, depending on what the tile is made out of and how large it is. Local tile outlets sometimes have close-out pieces discounted. One store even gave me a sample they no longer carried for free!

Scrapbook Paper – If your object is fairly small, like jewelry, scrapbook paper that is 12×12 opens a world of options. Most major craft stores offer sheets individually, but also consider books of scrapbooking paper since they can offer a wide variety of colors and textures in one package.

Foam Board – When you need to have a true white background, consider using foam core poster board like the professionals do. Most office supply and big box stores carry it. Over time, it will become dirty, so remember to replace it every so often.

This necklace was shot on the floor of a patio to complement the earthiness of the design.

Household Finds – The background you need may be at your fingertips! Consider using place mats, a wooden cutting board, wrapping paper, stone floors, or even your favorite shirts as a backdrop.

One the best pieces of advice we received for when you’re photographing your creations is to try multiple background options. What may look good in person can sometimes comes across totally different when loaded onto the computer. By shooting the same object on different backgrounds, you can tell which one really “pops”. (Thanks Dad for the advice!)

Have a great idea for a background? Share it with the world in the comments below!

Today is the big reveal day for Lori Anderson’s Bead Soup Blog Hop. As many of you know from my earlier post, the amazingly talented Margot Potter is my swap partner. She was so generous in sending me some of my most beloved beads, Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls. The clasp/focal is an absolute stunner from ClaspGarten.

Sparkling bead soup from my partner Margot Potter just waiting to be mixed.

And here is the finished piece…..

A Night at the Opera Choker Necklace by Suzann Sladcik Wilson

I had several ideas before this one came to be. I thought about making something longer, but the beads seemed to always came back to the design with the choker. I am really excited about how it came out. The next black tie event that I attend, you can bet that this necklace will be worn with a little black dress!

Thank you for stopping by to see my creation. Make sure you stop by Margot Potter’s Blog and see what she made with her soup. Click here to see the list of other bloggers participating in hop. Enjoy all of the delicious designs the Bead Soup blog hop has to offer!

Hello fellow beaders! We are glad to be back to blogging after a little bit of a hiatus. During the time away, we have had several big projects in the works. Over then next few days, you will find out about them. Today’s post, though, happens to be about the one that we are most excited to share with you!

Simple Beginnings: Beading by Suzann Sladcik Wilson and published by Fox Chapel Publishers. Available on Amazon.com for pre-order now!

Tada! It is the cover for our brand new book “Simple Beginnings: Beading” being published by Fox Chapel Publishing! How cool is that?! Even more cool is that it is available for pre-order from Amazon.com. You can click here to order it.

The book contains projects that are easy enough for an absolute beginner, and yet will inspire experienced beaders.  The photographs for the projects are beautiful and plentiful. The appendix has FAQ with many resources that jewelry makers are looking for.

Fox Chapel has been an excellent company to work with. Writing a book for the first time can be extremely challenging. They walked me through the process with the up most professionalism and understanding. For that, I am truly grateful.

Beadphoria for Designer Crafts Blog Hop: “For Country” Necklace

Time for another Designer Craft’s Blog hop! With Memorial Day having just past and the 4th of July coming around the corner, this month’s theme of “Patriotic”  comes at the perfect time.

When this challenge rolled around, I knew I wanted to create something unusual. “Patriotic” is a somewhat vintage word in that it brings up memories of our country’s heritage. I felt the necklace design should reflect that.

Rummaging through a bag of old medallions and tags from a local flea market, I came across this pendant. Originally, it was so tarnished, it appeared to be copper or bronze. Using a Sunshine Polishing Cloth and a lot of elbow grease, a treasure was unveiled.

The medallion was actually silver with gold highlights. What a surprise!

Finding out more about this patriotic medallion has been quite a challenge. There has only been one other image I have been able to find on Google like it. A brief mention is made about the National Lutheran Commission For Soldiers on the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America website.  If you are aware of any other information, please let me know in the comments!

I wanted to the design of the necklace to include patriotic colors, but in a more subdued way. Here is the final design “For County” using the pendant.

Beadphoria "For Country" Necklace designed by Suzann Sladcik Wilson for Designer Crafts Blog Hop

What do you think of the patriotic “For Country” piece? I would love to have your feedback in the comments below.

Now, click on either “forward” or “back” on the Designer Blog Hop button on the right hand side of the blog and see what other Patriotic creative ideas my fellow designers have come up with!

If you have any questions about beading, or the “For Country” necklace, please feel free to contact me at 224-305-3321 or Suzann@Beadphoria.com. Always happy to share the joy of beading with you, Suzann Sladcik Wilson of Beadphoria.com and BeadphoriaBoutique.com.

Celebrate Mother's Day by making this "Sparkling Memories" necklace by Suzann Sladcik Wilson using Beadalon & Katie Hacker's Katiedids!

By Suzann Sladcik Wilson

It’s the first Monday of the month! Time to hop around again with the Designer Crafts connection! This month’s theme is “Celebrations”. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to honor your mom with a beautiful piece of jewelry.

Recently, my friend Katie Hacker let me know about a fantastic contest from Beadalon featuring her line of Katiedid components. The winner will have their piece featured at the Beadalon Booth for the 2011 Bead and Button show, a signed copy of Katie’s Beading Secrets book, consideration of being part of a Beadalon ad, and a bunch of other great prizes. Click here to find out more!

I was inspired by the contest to use one of her components to make our “Sparkling Memories” Necklace. I turned the center of the Katiedid component into a frame by sealing and adhering a small photo with Mod Podge. I then inserted 18 4mm bicone Swarovski crystals in aquamarine (the color of the birthstone of the little one in the photo) into the outer rim. The crystals were covered with Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to lock them in place.

Once the pendent had dried for 3 hours, I strung the three sections necklace on Beadalon 19 strand Satin Silver beading wire. Beadalon Round Twist Solid Rings were used to connect the sections. The necklace was finished with ribbon so that the length could be adjustable.

What projects are you working on for Mother’s Day? Don’t forget to hop to other blogs by clicking on the Designer Crafts Connection button on the right hand side to see what they are celebrating!

"A Charming Easter" by Suzann Sladcik Wilson for Designer Crafts Connection.

One of the most beloved holidays on the calendar is Easter. There are many reasons to enjoy. Bright colors of spring give take over from the dreariness of winter. Flowers are starting to break through the once frozen ground. The longer hours of sunshine warm both body and soul. It really is a time of New Beginnings in many ways.

Here at Beadphoria, we wanted to share with you our “A Charming Easter” bracelet. It is part of another new beginning of us. We are honored to have been chosen to be included in the Designer Crafts Blog Connection. Today, you can click on the widget on the right hand side of this post and hop to other blogs of talented professional designers.

Each month the Designer Crafts Blog Connection will feature a different theme. This month is “Spring/Easter”. Here are the instructions on how to make the “A Charming Easter” bracelet.

“A Charming Easter” Bracelet Project

Round Nose Pliers
Chain Nose Pliers
Wire Cutters
Bead Mat

Beads and Findings for "A Charming Easter" Bracelet

Materials
2 – 4mm Swarovski Crystal Bicones in Jonquil.

1 – 7 inch length of Chain
9 – 2 inch silver headpins
1 – Jill MacKay Bird Lobster Clasp
1 – Silver Jump Ring
1- Pastel Egg Lampwork bead
2 each – Bunny Face, Chick-in-Egg, Cotton Candy Bunny, and Yellow Decorated Egg Lampwork  Easter beads.

1. On each headpin, place one 4mm Bicone Swarovski Crystal, one Easter lampwork bead, and one 4mm Bicone Swarovski Crystal that matches the first one placed on the headpin.

2. Bend the headpin at a 90 degree angle. Cut headpin to 10 mm long. Use Round Nose Pliers to make a simple loop. This will create a “charm”.

9 finished charms for "A Charming Easter" bracelet.

3. Continue steps 1 and 2 until you have made all 9 “charms”.

4. Lay out chain. Find center link. Take Pastel Egg charm and swing loop open using chain nose pliers. Hook loop through the bottom of the center link. Close loop with chain nose pliers so that it is now attached to the link.

5.  Count 4 links on either side of the center Pastel Egg charm. On the 4th link on each side, attach one Bunny Face charm in the same way the Pastel Egg charm was attached.

6. Continue the pattern for the remaining charms.

7. Once all charms are hooked onto the chain, attach a jump ring to the last link on one end of the chain.  On the other end, swing open the last link of the chain and attach Jill MacKay Bird Lobster Claw clasp. Swing the link back closed.

8. Your bracelet in now ready to bring a warm smile to the face of everyone who sees it!

We hope you enjoyed our project and would love to hear what you think of “A Charming Easter” bracelet in the comments below.

Now, go hop forward and be inspired by what the other crafty designers are making for Spring!

We at Beadphoria always enjoy sharing with you inspiring artisits, books, articles, and projects. Today we would like to present to you a video from Deutsche Welle (don’t worry – it’s in English!) about Jewelry as Art – Peter Skubic Show in Munich, Germany that was originally posted by Lark Jewelry and Beading books on Facebook.

Peter Skubic’s views on jewelry making mirror how many of us feel when designing our wearable works of art when he says “Jewelry is like drawing on the body. It is a nod to a certain way of thinking. A non-perscribed way of thinking. It is a way of expressing your personality.” Well said!

I think that is what draws many of us to the world of beading and jewelry design. When we finish a piece of jewelry and wear it, we are boldly showing our  personality, passion, and creativity for all the world to see. We, and those that wear our beaded jewelry creations, become a mobil art gallery as we go about our daily lives. Truly, we beaders are “Creating Joy (for the world and ourselves) One Bead at a Time!”

Take a moment to enjoy the video. You are sure to hear many more statements about Jewelry as Art that will ring true and make you smile.

The show is currently running at the  Pinakothek der Moderne (Modern art Museum) in Munich, Germany until May 15, 2011.

If you have any questions about beading, or the video about Jewelry as Art- Peter Skubic show in Munich , please feel free to contact me at 224-305-3321 or Suzann@Beadphoria.com. Always happy to share the joy of beading with you, Suzann Sladcik Wilson of Beadphoria.com and BeadphoriaBoutique.com.

Ingredients just waiting to be mixed!

Today is reveal day for the Bead Soup Blog Hop put together by Lori Anderson! My partner Lisa Petrillo of Lucid Moon Studios sent me the wonderful mix of beads shown above. I have to say, these beads seem to almost put themselves together. The design is definitely out of my box and was so much fun to create! So with no further ado….

"Boundless Inspiration" By Suzann Sladcik Wilson

This week Andrew Thorton’s Weekly Word was “Boundless”. When I read it, at first I struggled with the thought of a jewelry design that was boundless. Jewelry in many ways has boundaries – a beginning and end with a clasp, only a certain number of beads fit on a string, specific lengths for different types of necklaces.

It was then I turned to my bead soup beads. The pendant suddenly seemed to speak to me. Birds seem to live boundlessly. Flying through the sky, they enjoy their freedom. They defy gravity and go against what might hold them down. Wow! What a great reminder of what it means to be boundless.

Lisa’s beads brought a couple of other meanings for “boundless” to me. The boundless inspiration beads swaps can bring. The beads Lisa picked for me opened my eyes to new color and texture options that I would have not considered before. Her gift of the beads was also sent with “boundless” kindness. It helped stir creativity in me that had been held captive for awhile. For that gift Lisa, I say Thank You!

Make sure you take a look at Lisa Petrillo’s Blog and the other 208 blogs that are participating in the Bead Soup blog hop by clicking on the links below. I am sure you will find lots of “Boundless Inspiration”!

Inside of my package from Lisa Petrillo of Lucid Moon Studio

Wouldn't this package of beads warm your soul?

Beadphoria has been wrapped up lately in a whirl wind of busyness with getting ready for and attending the CHA show in Los Angeles, CA (more on that later!). After being delayed for 2 days due to the snow storm in Chicago, there was a wonderful surprise waiting for me. My Bead Soup partner, Lisa Petrillo of Lucid Moon Studios sent me a beautiful package that has birds printed on the outside. What a nice bit of sunshine from Florida to help warm up my cold midwestern soul!

Here are the goodies that were inside the bag!

Shortly after catching up on some much needed sleep, I opened my package. There is nothing like seeing amazing beads to immediately lift your spirits!  Lisa had packaged each of the types of beads and findings individually with a round piece of paper that not only listed what they were, but where they were from.

The choice of colors by Lisa are inspiring!

The pallet she sent me brought a feeling of warmth and comfort. The sea foam greens of the pendent from Spirited Earth, ceramic beads, and aquaterra rounds, along with the copper tones of the chain, etched washers (which Lisa made herself!), and copper toggle had my thoughts drifting to surf and sand. Just what I needed when looking at my yard under 6 feet of snow!

This pendent made by Lisa Petrillo was a wonderful surprise! Check out her Etsy store for more.

Lisa also included a bird pendant that she had made. What talent! It would have been something I would have purchased myself, so I feel especially honored that she included it in my soup. This design with along with my other Bead Soup offering will be posted on February 24.

Lisa Petrillo is an amazing designer who’s talent extends into making pendents, etched copper washers, and other items. Make sure you check out her supply shop by clicking here. Her finished jewelry can be found here. You can also become a fan on Facebook of Lisa’s work by joining her fan page.

Lisa, thank you for such gorgeous beads and sharing your talents with me! It truly warms my soul! You can see what I sent her by visiting her blog.

If you have any questions about beading, or the Bead Soup Swap, please feel free to contact me at 224-305-3321 or Suzann@Beadphoria.com. Always happy to share the joy of beading with you, Suzann Sladcik Wilson of Beadphoria.com and BeadphoriaBoutique.com.
