Beadphoria and Suzann Sladcik Wilson were recently featured in the Simply Beads Newsletter about our beaded butterflies. Barb Switzer, who is the editor of the newsletter and a fabulous wire artist herself, wrote the wonderful piece.
Several people have written me with questions. Here is some more information about the project:
What was the motivation behind the butterflies? – Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care here in Park Ridge, IL wanted to bring awareness to their in-patient unit called “The Ark”. The public art project featured pairs of animals sponsored by local businesses. Beadphoria was commissioned by Resurrection Hospital to bring the butterflies to life. We are grateful to Resurrection Hospital for this opportunity and look forward to seeing the statues on at the Hospital after they come off of display at the Park Ridge parks.
Where are they now? – They are currently at Cumberland Park in Park Ridge, IL on Cumberland Ave., about a block south of Touhy Ave. .
How tall are the butterflies? – They are about 4 feet high by 3 feet wide.
How did you do it? – I downloaded some pictures of butterflies and then sketched the designs right onto the statues. I then labeled what colors should go where. Myself and many fantastic volunteers then glued each bead in place.
How long did they take? – We were on a very tight production schedule. The Monarch had to be done in about 2.5 weeks for an opening gala event. All in all, about 6 weeks for both with many helping hands!
What adhesive did you use? – After much trial and error, Liquid Nails – Small Projects Clear really did the trick! We probably used over 100 tubes!
How many beads did you use? – Each Butterfly had over 20,000 beads.
